Three new departments by Dec

KHULNA: Three new departments are likely to be opened at Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital (SSANSH) by December this year. Director of SSANSH Dr Bidhan Chandra Goswami told BSS on Sunday that the health ministry has taken a decision to open the three departments – Neuro- Surgery, Elective Orthopedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery -- at the hospital by December. The ministry will also open Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 20 more dialysis units for kidney patients at the facility. Currently, a total of 20 dialysis units are functioning, he said, adding the hospital now has a total of 82 beds. Of which, 25 are for cardiology, 25 for neurology, 20 for nephrology, 10 for urology and 10 beds are for vascular surgery patients. He also hoped the hospital will have 125 beds after the start of functioning of the three departments from next year as a project proposal has been lying under consideration of the ministry. Meanwhile, health services are being hampered these days due mainly to shortage of manpower, and skilled technicians for operating some machines. SSANSH sources said there are a total of 50 vacant posts against 95 in the hospital. The posts which are lying vacant are three chief consultants, nine senior consultants, three junior consultants, two registrars, two resident physicians cardiology, one resident surgeon cardiology, nine assistant resisters, one resident medical officer and 20 assistant surgeons or equal posts. Several machines, including X-ray machine, ETT machine, and video endoscopy machine, are lying idle duo to lack of technicians. Talking to BSS, Deputy Director Dr Ali said health services are being hindered due to shortage of manpower and technicians. "Over 800 patients are getting health services every day from the hospital and the authorities are committed to rendering healthcare for the masses," he said. The ministry is very much sincere in solving the problems of the hospital, he said, adding that poor people are happy as they easily get medicare at a minimum cost from the facility. Contacted, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, president of Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee (Khulna Unnayan Sangram Samonnay Committee), said the present Awami League government has made health services available at the doorsteps of the people. "The government has recruited adequate number of doctors and nurses, but why such shortage is prevailing at SSANSH?" He also said the BNP-Jamaat government had stopped the activities of the hospital for political cause but the AL government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has opened the SSANSH for ensuring health services for the people of southwestern region.
