Mohammad Shahjalal clinched his maiden title of the 110th tournament of historic Jabber-er Bolikhela yesterday at Laldighi ground in Chattogram defeating the last year champion Tarekual Islam Jibon. Md Shahjalal hailed from Cumilla district became runner in 2018. The referee Abdul Malek declared Shahjalal as the champion after 26 minutes of the competition around 6:06pm. He bagged bagged two points out of three.
In a reaction Shahjalal said “I was practicing round the year to clinch the title of the Bolikhela. The Almighty Allah fulfilled my dreams.” The competition was started at 3:30pm at Laldighi ground, a total of 62 ‘bolis’ (wrestlers) aged between 15 and 70 took part in the 110th ‘bolikhela’. They came from different parts of the country including Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati , and Cumilla, mainly from rural areas.
The committee gave Tk 25,000 to the champion, Tk 15,000 to the runner-up, and Tk. 1,000 to each participant. The wrestling competition was the main attraction of the traditional three-day Abdul Jabbar Boli Khela cum Boishaki Fair popularly known as “Jabbarer Boli Khela”, usually held on April 25 every year.
The century-old event which is marked by a three-day fair of locally made beautiful handicrafts, artifacts, earthen goods and indigenous household items at one and half a kilometer adjoining areas of Laldighi Maidan will formally end today.
