Farabi acquitted in ICT case

The Cyber Tribunal Court yesterday released Safiur Rahman Farabi, also an accused in blogger Avijit Roy murder case, in case file against him under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act. Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossai pronounced the verdict as the allegation against him could not be proved. Before the verdict pronouncement, Farabi was produced before court from prison.

The case statement says, Farabi threatened VIPs on social media and also threatened the editor of a national daily ‘Bangladesh Pratidin’ Nayeem Nizam for publishing the column of Taslima Nasrin. Later, on March 14, 2015 Fazlur Rahman, Detective Branch Inspector (Ramna Zone) filed a case under the ICT Act.

On March 2, 2015 Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Farabi in Dhaka’s Jatrabari Bus Terminal area for issuing threats to several personalities for their writings. However, Farabi will not be released from jail as he is imprisoned as a murder case accused.

Earlier, on March 14, police charged six people, including sacked army officer Syed Ziaul Haq and ‘extremist’ blogger Safiur Rahman Farabi, over the murder of writer Avijit Roy. The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police submitted the charge-sheet to the court four years after the murder near the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in the capital.
