The capital yesterday experienced around 51.8 mm of rainfall with thunderstorm and temporary gusty winds under the influence of a seasonal low, lying over West Bengal to Northeast Bay. Several areas of the capital were inundated due to the rain, hugely inconveniencing city dwellers, including school, college and officers goers.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the ongoing weather conditions are likely to continue in different parts of the country, causing heavy rain or thundershowers in the next 48 hours.

Abdur Rahman, a meteorologist of the BMD, told The Independent that this was actually the effect of seasonal storms, locally known as ‘kalboishakhi jhor’. The weather was expected to improve after 72 hours. “As the weather patterns will entail a succession of seasonal storms, such weather conditions could continue till the end of April,” said the meteorologist. The Met office forecast in its bulletin yesterday (Monday) that rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind were likely to occur at many places over the Rangpur, Rajshahi Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls and isolated hails at places over the country.

Day and night temperature may fall by (1-2)°C over across the country during this period. The wind speed in Dhaka was expected to be Southwest/Southerly 8–12 kph, and temporary gusty wind to be 30–40 kph. The weather outlook indicated that rain/thunder showers activity could decrease and temperature might rise at the end of the period. In the last 24 hours, the Met office recorded 51.8mm of rainfall in Dhaka as of 6am yesterday (Monday).

The highest temperature on Monday was 33.2 degrees Celsius at Patuakhali in the Barishal division and the minimum was 17.8 degrees Celsius at Tetulia in Panchagarh district yesterday (Monday).

The Met office outlook for the current month, however, noted the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind in some isolated place across the country. The sun sets at 6:17 pm today and rises at 5:45 am tomorrow in the capital.
