Delwar Hossain’s brilliant all-round show coupled with Afif Hossain’s spellbinding 97 powered Shinepukur Cricket Club to register a two-wicket win over Mohammedan Sporting with two balls to spare in the ninth-round high-scoring thriller of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

By winning the nail-biting fixture, Shinepukur Cricket Club lived up their high hopes of going to the next Super League phase alive. They jumped to fifth place with nine points from ninth round games just after table-toppers Abahani Limited (16), Legends of Rupganj (16), Prime Bank Cricket Club (14) and Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club (12).

Chasing the steep challenging of 325, Shinepukur Cricket Club were fumbled by Sohag Gazi, who sent openers Sabbir Hossain and Shadman Islam Anik cheaply. But Unmukt Chand tried to bail them out of the precarious situation. He hit 47 for the third-wicket stand with Towhid Hriody, who was ill-fated run out by Liton Kumar Das and Saqlain Sojib making a mess-up with Chand because he (Towhid) reached at the other end not getting any intimation from Indian batsman.

Together with Amit Hasan, Afif Hossain rescued them from the muzzy situation and pulled together an invaluable 118 for the sixth-wicket stand that actually brought them back in the contention. Wicketkeeper-batsman Amit braced the same fate of Unmukt Chand as he missed his fifty for just seven runs.

Afif partnered with captain Suhrawardi Shuvo and added 26 before his unfortunate departure for 97. The middle-order batsman clubbed five big shots over the boundaries and four boundaries in his 86-ball 97.

Captain in association with Delwar Hossain made a useful 59 for the eighth-wicket stand that brought them near to victory.

Earlier, Despite Delwar Hossain’s fifer Mohammedan Sporting Club built up their imposing total of 324 in 49.3 overs after being put in to bat courtesy of Liton Kumar Das’ jaw-dropping 84 along with Raqibul Hasan’s 74 while Irfan Sukkur and Avishek Mitra smashed an identical 50 each.

Actually an opening stand of 101 from Liton Kumar Das and Irfan Sukkur that laid the foundation of the impressive total. Sohag Gazi once again showed his batting intent beside his regular job of bowling. He struck a quick-fire 45 off 22, littered with three sixes and as many fours.

Prime Bank win

Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) were flattened by Prime Bank Cricket Club with a compressive 172-run victory at their home turf.

Opted to bat, Prime Bank Cricket Club rode on Abhimanyu Easwaran’s 92 and Nahidul Islam’s 50 compiled 222 for eight in their stipulated overs, after which BKSP batters were skittled out for paltry 50 in the face of fast-bowler Al Amin Hossain’s bowling devastation. Al Amin grabbed his five wickets, giving away just 20 runs and was adjudged player of the match.

Elsewhere, at Khan Shaheb Oman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, Gazi Group Cricketers tucked past Brothers Union by nine runs in the well contested fixture. Sent in to bat, Gazi Group Cricketers mustered a modest 206 for all-out in 49.4 overs despite Sajidul Islam’s four-for. Gazi Group’s Pakistan recruit Kamran Ghulam top-scored with 81. In its pursuit, Brothers Union were bundled out for 197 with seven balls to spare.
