Durga Puja preparation progresses in districts

Preparations for celebration of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, are progressing fast throughout the country. The festival will begin on October 19 and conclude on Octber 22 through the immersion of idols in rivers. In Jhenidah, about 391 puja mandaps have been set up for the big celebration in the district. Sculptors are passing very busy time in six upazilas to give the final touches on Goddess Durga and other idols.
Vice president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Committee, Jhenidah, Kanak Kanti Das said people of all religion will enjoy the occasion in harmony. He also said this year Durga Puja is going to be celebrated at 391 puja mandaps in the district.He, however, said the number of puja mandaps has fallen 29 this year.
Artist Gonesh Kumar said: “Now, we are busy painting the idols.” He said this year prices of all kinds of idol making materials have increased affecting the celebration.
President of Jhenidah sadar upazila Puja Udjapan Committee Profullo Sarkar said last year, every puja temple received 500 kilogram rice as government donation on such occasion.
He said it requires Tk3 lakh to Tk3.5 lakh for observing the five-day celebration. He also said they need uninterrupted power supply during the festival.
Jhenidah police super Altaf Hossain said extra security measures will be taken for the protection of puja mandaps and the viewers.
In Nilphamari, a total of 812 Durga puja mandaps are being erected in the district.
Artists are now busy giving finishing touches to the images of deities to make the idols attractive to the devotees and the visitors.
Tajul Ahmed, district relief and rehabilitation officer, told this correspondent this year 812 puja mandaps are being set up in all the six upazilas of the district.
Police said special security measures will be taken in and around all the puja mandaps of the district to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the smooth holding of the festival.
