Huge current nets seized

A mobile court in a drive seized one lakh meters of current nets from the Meghna River on Wednesday. The mobile court led by Additional District Magistrate Abdullah Al Mahmud conducted the drive on the bank of the Meghna River stretching from Boro Station Molhed area to Mohonpur in Matlab North upazila from 10 am till 5 pm. During the drive, the mobile court recovered the illegal nets. Later, the seized nets were burnt at Boro Station Molhed area.
Three ‘arms peddlers’ held

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three alleged firearms peddlers with a pistol, two magazines and five rounds of bullet from Shibganj Bazar area under Shibganj upazila of the district on Wednesday night. The arrested persons were identified as Md. Mamun Rashid alias Langra Mamun, 20, son of Md. Gazlur Rahman of Dadanchak village, Md. Janibul Islam Josi, 30, son of Md. Shofiqul Islam of Doulatpur Mohajanpara and Md. Nur Alam, 20, son of Md. Shahjahan of Jalmachmari, all under Shibganj upazila. RAB said, acting on a tip off, an operation team of the force raided the aforesaid area at around 7 pm and arrested them with a cartoon. After searching the carton, the RAB found the firearm and ammunition. During primary interrogation, the arrested persons admitted that they were running illegal firearms business for a long time. The arrested persons were handed over to the local police station.
Lawyer hurt in knife attack

A lawyer and former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League was severely injured in a knife attack by rivals allegedly over a murder case at Dighapatia village in Sadar Upazila on Wednesday. The injured Nion Hossain, a practising lawyer at Natore District and Sessions Judge’s Court, is now receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), after being referred there in view of the severity of his injuries. Officer-in-Charge of Natore Sadar Police Station said Nion had been at loggerheads with a local individual named Sajib Hossain following a prosecution of a murder case. Sajib and his accomplice intercepted Nion’s motorcycle on his way to work in the morning and indiscriminately chopped Nion, leaving him severely wounded.
Death-row convict arrested

Police arrested a fugitive deathrow convict from his house at Brahmankhola village in Srinagar upazila on Wednesday. The arrestee was identified as Salauddin Titu, son of Moslem Uddin of the village. Officer-in-Charge of Srinagar Police Station, Md Yunus Ali said Salauddin was given death penalty for killing Zakir, a resident of Shampur in Dhaka in 1999. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive at his old address on Wednesday evening and managed to arrest him, although Titu did attempt to sprint away. In 1999, Salauddin Titu shot Zakir to death in Jurain area under Shampur Police Station. Victim’s father Abdur Rahim filed a case immediately. Judge Md Abu Hanif of a speedy trial tribunal in Dhaka sentenced him to capital punishment in 2005 in his absentia. All this while Titu remained out ofr law enfoprcers’ grasp.
59 arrested in Satkhira

Police, in special drives arrested 59 persons including a drug trader from eight upazilas of the district in last 12- hour ending at 8am yesterday morning. Police also recovered 209 grams of Ganja during the drives. Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
