The first posthumous solo sculpture exhibition with the sculptures by the country’s first modern sculptor Novera Ahmed is now on display at the Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), Shahbag in the city. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest on October 7 at the Kobi Sufia Kamal Auditorium of BNM. Chaired by president of National Museum’s Board of Trustees M Azizur Rahman, senior secretary of Public Administration Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and BNM director general Faizul Latif Chowdhury, among others, were present at the event. Besides, Professor Lala Rukh Selim, chairman of Dhaka University Faculty of Fine Arts’ sculpture department read out a long essay on the life and works of Novera Ahmed.
A total number of 40 sculptures by Novera, who died on May 6 this year, are being displayed at the exhibition. Besides sculpture, imitation of ‘The Birds Serpent-1984’, ‘Moonlit-1978’, ‘Soul of the Phantom-1973’ by Novera Ahmed have been put on display in the exhibition.
Her first exhibition was held in University of Dhaka in 1960. Another exhibition of her works was held in Lahore in 1961. Her last exhibition was also held in Paris in July 1973. Novera Hossain, one of the key designers of the Central Shaheed Minar of Bangladesh, was born in 1930. In 1955, she was awarded a Diploma in Design in the Modeling and Sculpture course from Camberwell College of Arts in London. At Camberwell, she studied under the British sculptor Jacob Epstein and Karel Vogel of Czechoslovakia. She studied European sculpture under the sculptor Venturino Venturi in Florence and later in Vienna. She was influenced by many western modern sculptors such as Henry Moore. At one stage in her career, she jointly worked with Hamidur Rahman and was credited with the key designer of the Central Shaheed Minar.
She was awarded with Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 1997. During 1956-1960, she had done about 100 sculptures in Dhaka. Out of her 100 sculptures, 33 sculptures are currently in the Bangladesh National Museum. The exhibition will remain open to all from everyday from 9am to 7pm (Friday: 2:30pm–7:30pm), until October 19. l
