‘Kali O Kalam Young Poets and Literature Awards’ conferred

The prize giving of the seventh edition of ‘Kali O Kalam Young Poets and Literature Awards’ was held on Saturday evening at the Bengal Shilpalaya in the city’s Dhanmondi area. Each of the winners received a crest, a certificate and prize money worth BDT.1 Lac in recognition of their brilliant works for the year 2014. Three young writers received awards in three categories- poetry, essay and research, and short story and literature. This year’s awards were given to Sakira Parveen for her poetry book titled ‘Bristy’r Matlami’; M Abdul Alim for his writing ‘Pabnay Bhasha Andolan’ in the category of essay and research, while Fatima Rumi received award for her writing ‘Ami Anindita’ in the category of short story and literature.
Presided over by the president of the editorial board of Kali O Kalam Professor Emiratus Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Dr. Biswajit Ghosh, Dhaka University announced the name of the award recipients in the programme on behalf of the jury board.
Veteran writer Samaresh Majumdar from West Bengal attended the programme as chief guest, while veteran litterateur and dramatist Imdadul Haq Milon was also present as special guest on the occasion and handed over the prizes to the winners.
Among others, Editor of Kali O Kalam Abul Hasnat, Director General of Bengal Foundation Luva Nahid Chowdhury and Chairman of Bengal Foundation Abul Khair were also present at the event. Imdadul Haq Milon urged in his speech, “The award should be introduced for the litterateurs of both Bengals, and not only for youngsters, but also for all writers in Bangladesh and West Bengal.”  Samaresh Majumder said, “If any such initiative could be taken to appraise that how much the writers, who won the awards during last seven years, could reach their readers and how the readers accept them for their other writings—then it could be understood that the writers really honoured this selection.” “I hope that those who have received awards today, they will reach to the readers, and at the same time, the readers will say it’s my writer”, he added further. Following the award giving ceremony, the audience was entertained with a short documentary based on the previous year’s prize giving ceremonies of ‘Kali o Kalam’.   To encourage the young writers and poets of the country, Kali O Kalam, a monthly Bengali literary magazine, has been giving the ‘Kali O Kalam Torun Kobi O Lekhok Puroshkar’ since the year 2008.
