Congratulations to the Awami League for securing a phenomenal victory in the 11th national parliamentary elections. With 259 seats, the party has been given a rousing approval by the nation in an election which was held without any major disruption across the country. The opposition failed to put up any semblance of resistance.
There were, however, some skirmishes and incidents of unpleasantness, but these were stray episodes having no bearing on the overall holding of the polls which provided full security to the people of Bangladesh. For this, the Election Commission and the law enforcers must be thanked.
The victory for Awami League, which has been in power since the last ten years, is a vindication of its stance that when there is flow of progress, the people will not turn away from the regime, even if it has been in power for two previous terms. Since 2008, Bangladesh has made remarkable strides in all sections, becoming developing nations from a least developed one which had hounded the image of her citizens for so long.
During this time, the foreign reserve has soared, self-sufficiency in food achieved and economy kept on a steady six plus growth. While many countries in the world, especially developed ones in Europe, were rattled by economic woes plus prolonged recession, unemployment and a general sense of malaise, the picture in Bangladesh has been quite the opposite.
Some disruptive events aimed at severely undermining rule of law were tackled with firmness and militancy along with radical elements were dealt with exemplary swiftness. The power situation has improved, infrastructure is being built and prosperity has impacted lives of millions of middle class people who are currently enjoying almost all the perks that are presented to their counterparts in first world states.
The vote results are actually a united seal for the relentless development drive taken by the AL leadership in the last ten years. The results are before the nation and the masses can see how their living standards have changed for the better.
From another angle, the AL’s liberation spirit has injected a sense of fiery national pride within Bangladeshis which works as an impetus in making the modern day young feel that what others can do, they can do even better. While the elections are over without any hiccup, the task now is to work with all sides to carry the advancement process forward. In the spirit of unity, all opposition parties should accept the result and engage in a constructive parley with the next government.
