‘Expand quality in higher edn’

A day-long national workshop on the achievements of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) was held at a city hotel yesterday. University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, implementing agency of the largest project in higher education sector of Bangladesh, organised the workshop to showcase its major achievements.

Md Sohorab Hossain, Secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Education, was present as the Chief Guest while UGC Chairman, Professor Abdul Mannan presided over the function. UGC Member Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Additional Secretary (Development)  of ministry of education Dr Mahmud-ul Haque, and Senior Operations Officer, World Bank Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman were present as the special guests.

Dr Gauranga Chandra Mohanta, ndc, (Additional Secretary), Project Director of HEQEP, gave the welcome speech at the event.  

In his presidential speech, UGC Chairman said, HEQEP changed the scenario completely in the arena of higher education. No other project in education sector saw 99 per cent success rate. The World Bank in its last review mission rated the activities of HEQEP as highly satisfactory.

 “We are working to expand higher education ensuring its quality. In this regard we have placed much importance to develop the teaching-learning facilities along with research infrastructure”, he said. Professor Mannan said in his speech mentioned that around 38 lakh students were studying at tertiary education. About 42 per cent of the students are female. The target of the current government is to raise it 50 per cent, he added.

The chief guest in his speech stated that HEQEP achieved significant success to raise the quality of education in higher education institutes. A number of researches have been carried out with few breakthrough innovations. It will bring massive changes in our socio-economic scenario of our country.

The quality of education must be ensured and continuation of achievements in higher education field must be kept, he added.  

Members of UGC, Vice-chancellors, Pro Vice-chancellors of different universities, distinguished educationists were present in the occasion. Besides, the officials of education ministry, UGC, HEQEP, World Bank were also present in the function.

The main objectives of the project is to improve the quality and relevance of teaching-learning and research environment in higher education institutions through encouraging innovation within universities and enhance the technical and institutional capacity of the higher education sector.

The 238 million US dollar project project is jointly financed by the WB and government of Bangladesh. The ten year project started in 2019 and is going to be closed in 31st December 2018.
