Top business leaders and entrepreneurs across the political divides yesterday said they want to see Sheikh Hasina as the prime minister of the country for next term again, terming her the ‘symbol of hope’ for the entire business community and common people as well for the country’s thriving growth.
The business leaders said this at a business conference organised by Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BCCI) in the capital to express support to the leadership of Sheikh Hasina in future.
Responding to the expectation of the business leaders, the prime minister said it is the responsibility of the government to create a congenial atmosphere for the business. The government will not do business but create atmosphere for development of industries, trade and commerce, she said.
Top business entrepreneurs, CEOs, managing directors of manufacturing industries and export-import enterprises, leaders of steel industries, service oriented organisations, power sector and ICT, and leaders of trade bodies joined the conference.
“We want continuation of the policy and functioning of the regulatory body consistently and predictably to take forward the country to that level that we are dreaming of,” said FBCCI president Md. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin.
“Business community wants a leader who have vision, courage, cooperation and whose doors are always open for them,” he said, adding that Sheikh Hasina is the last resort to resolve any problem of industries, owners and workers and she stands as the guardian for development.
The businesses also extended their full support to the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of Sheikh Hasina to corruption, urging her to give punishment if there is any ‘black sheep’ in the business community.
Salman F Rahman, private sector development affairs adviser to PM and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, said the business community is very much grateful to the premier as she extended cooperation to every business person irrespective of their political affiliation to do business freely over the last 10 years.
“Sheikh Hasina never considered which businessperson is Awami League or non-Awami League. Many big deals were held in the country in the last ten years. But none can say they had to face interference of any entity like ‘Hawa Bhaban’ or give any bribe for doing business,” said Rahman, also the Vice-Chairman of Beximco Group.
A video documentary on the development of various sectors and mega projects undertaken by the present government was screened at the programme that began with playing of the national anthem.
In her response to the appreciation extended by the businesses, Sheikh Hasina reiterated that she does not want to go to power by any means which may destabilise the present peaceful situation in the country.
“I don’t have any desire to go to power by any means possible ...if we can get elected by people’s vote then it’s Alhamdullillah. If we can’t retain power, there is no problem. Let peace prevail in the country,” she said.
She said her party wants to see a peaceful election in the country as many political parties are contesting the 11th general election of the country. Hasina said a beautiful and peaceful situation was prevailing in the country.
“Let the election be held maintaining this peaceful atmosphere, the party which will get the people’s mandate will be there in power,” she said.
The prime minister said she wanted the people of the country to cast their votes peacefully and choose their desired government. “Let that environment prevail in the country... I do want that.”
Hasina mentioned if the peaceful situation prevails in the country, it will advance further.
She sought support from the businesses community for the ‘Boat’ to maintain the pace of development and finish the incomplete development projects to make the country developed and prosperous one.
“We’ve taken so many projects including some mega projects, we need more time to complete those,” Hasina said.
Mentioning the private sector as the driving force of the economy, she said the private sector will be the key player while the government will act as the facilitator.
Hasina said the drive against militancy, terrorism and drugs will continue while the government will show zero tolerance against corruption.
