BPL opening ceremony unlikely

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) sixth edition is drawing nearer as only 17 days remained for the cash-rich Twenty20 domestic tournament of Bangladesh.

But BPL governing council is yet to sit for talking or even holding any discussion to decide whether they will arrange any concert on opening ceremony to mark the ensuing edition of the BPL Twenty20 tournament.

The six and four -laden tournament is scheduled to get underway on January 5, 2019, just four days after the upcoming parliamentary election that is slated to take place on December 30, 2018.

BPL governing council acting chairman and BCB director Sheikh Sohel hinted that the possibility of holding any gala programme on opening ceremony within the short span of time is slim.

“Actually the national election is held this year. All are busy in the election which will be taken place on December 30,” said Sheikh Sohel.

“After the conclusion of the election, we will not get much more time. Basically if we think, we’ll have only two more days in hand. Is it possible to organise a big scale opening ceremony within this short span of time?,” Sohel told the media.

“Moreover, we’re yet to sit or hold any talk about concert on opening ceremony. The BPL will directly be telecast on January 5. We’ve halted everything for the election,” he added

The BPL council had decided not to arrange opening ceremony before the previous edition because some districts of the north, east and west of the country were hit by a devastating flood.

And so, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) took their decision to distribute the money of the opening ceremony among the flood-affected people what they directly did in some areas including Sirajganj, Manikganj and Bhairab last year.
