Alia Kamal’s first solo show underway at Jatra Biroti

A two-week solo exhibition of artist Alia Kamal titled ‘Excerpts’ is underway at Jatra Biroti in the capital’s Banani area.

This exhibitionis showcasing the artist’s oil paintings for the first time in a public space. These works portray fragments of entire lives--intimate moments, perhaps in the mundane or perhaps in silent crises.

Being inspired from conversations, thoughts and lived experiences, the artist suspends in various frames an attempt to make the ‘personal’ into ‘universal’.

Alia Kamal’s journey started off in the sciences, where soon enough she was caught in the proverbial rat race of competition and self–aggrandizement. Later, she tried on other career hats too, such as working at a research lab and then in the non-profit sector. There was a lot of variability throughout those years, with only one constant—her compulsion to make art. In addition to oil paintings her body of work extend to acrylic paintings, bottle paintings and Papier-mâché sculptures from recycled materials.

This is the first solo exhibition of artist Alia Kamal. Her work has previously appeared at Dhaka Arts Center, TEDxDhaka, Longitude Latitude 6, Mad Koffee 2.0 and the Milkshake Collective.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition ‘Excerpts’ was held on November 10 with a classical music performance in flute by Musarrat Jabeen Rahman.

The exhibition remains open to all every day from 5pm to 8pm till November 24.
