6 RU academic buildings to be named after eminent people

The Rajshahi University authorities are going to name six of its academic buildings after six eminent persons of the country. A committee, led by university pro-vice chancellor Prof Choudhury M Zakaria, has been formed in this regard.  The committee proposed the authorities concerned to name the university’s four science buildings, the fine arts building and the agricultural building after six eminent persons.

The committee has proposed to name the agricultural and the fine arts buildings after Bangladesh-origin American scientist Professor Maqsudul Alam and noted painter Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin respectively.

The committee has also proposed to name the university’s first, second, third, and fourth science buildings after eminent mathematician and physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, renowned chemist Muhammad Qudrat-i-Khuda, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, and noted mathematical physicist and cosmologist Jamal Nazrul Islam respectively.

Besides, they recommended to correct the spelling of the names of three academic buildings — Momtazuddin Kala Bhaban, Shahidullah Kala Bhaban and Syed Ismail Hossain Siraji Bhaban.

RU pro-vice-chancellor Prof Choudhury M Zakaria said that the country have a lot of eminent scientists, writers, and cultural personalities, who were awarded nationally and internationally for their outstanding performances to their respective fields. He said, “The proposal will be finalised at the university next syndicate meeting, with RU vice-chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan in the chair”.

Prof Zakaria also said that they had also taken a 50-year master plan for overall development of the university with an estimated cost of Tk 3,000 crore.

“Professor Raquib Ahmed and Professor Md Rejaur Rahman of geography and environmental science department have been assigned to design the master plan,” said pro-VC.

Besides, a mega project has been taken for building archive to keep rare documents of Liberation War.
