With an objective to make acquaintance Dhaka City to whole globe and to promote the tourism of Bangladesh, the Sports International is organising ‘Dhaka Half Marathon’ competition to be held today.
A 21-kilometre distance marathon will start from Police Plaza (at the north side of the Hatirjheel) at 7am and will end at the Manik Miah Avenue through Hatirjheel, Tejgaoan Industrial Area, Bijoy Sarani Flyover, Bijoy Sarani, New Road of Old Airport, Agargaon and Khamarbari.
Abidur Rahman Shimu, chairman of the Sports International informed in a press conference yesterday that it would be the six times they have been organising the marathon in Bangladesh where he expected more than 3000 runners from home and abroad will take part in the competition.
After one year interval they are going to organising the competition again, while they also organised it in Cox’s Bazar in 2013.
However, this time 11 professional runners from different countries will participate in this competition when a man and a women elite runners Joseph Ngare and Margaret Njuguna have already reached here in Dhaka yesterday.
Joseph Ngare and Margaret Njuguna, who attended the press meet yesterday said, “Really I am pleased to be part of this occasion. Actually I came to know about this through social media and made registration to take part. As professional runner I think it is a positive thinking of the organisers. It can make a city and the country’s tourism familiar to the tourist of the whole world.”
Abidur Rahman Shimu also said that 3000 runners have already made their registration since Wednesday including 11 professional runners from Ethiopia, Kenya Palestine and Uganda.
Shimu also expected that after a successful conclusion of this edition, they have target to organise it as a full Marathon with the participation of more professional runners from abroad.
The first prize of the competition is 15,000 US Dollars, second prize $1000 and third prize is $750 while among the participants will complete the run will get medals.
Meanwhile, the budget of the competition was taka estimated for taka 45 lakhs to 50 lakh, when the organisers are providing the air tickets and accommodations including local hospitalities for the foreign runners.
