The curtain will rise on the ‘Dhaka International Folk Festival 2018’, one of the most-awaited events for the Dhaka audience, today evening at the Bangladesh Army Stadium in the capital.
This year, 174 folk musicians from across the world scheduled to perform in the fourth edition of the three-day festival. Organised by Sun Communications Limited, the mega event will take place every day from 6pm to 12 midnight.
The festival will begin today with the performance of Bhabna Nrityadal from Bangladesh. Other artistes of the day are Dikanda from Poland, Wadali Brothers and Satyaki Banerjee from India and Baul Abdul Hai Dewan from Bangladesh.
Bhabna is a school of classical (Manipuri & Bharatnatyam dance) and creative dance. Bhabna was founded by Zeenat Afroza and Samina Husain Prema in the year 2007. The primary objective of ‘Bhabna’ is to expand the role of our rich cultural heritage by retaining the classical dance forms and applying these to Nazrul and Tagorean style of dances. Bhabna also works on other dance forms such as Folk, Raibeshey-a martial dance form and Contemporary dances.
Dikanda is a music band of international renown, playing ‘world music’. They come from Szczecin, Poland. The band has been playing since 1997 and has recorded 7 albums so far, including a Live DVD recorded in the Witkacy Theatre in Zakopane. They have performed hundreds of concerts, mostly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but also in Russia, India and the USA, and won numerous awards.
The Wadali Brothers – Puranchand Wadali and Pyarelal Wadali – are Sufi singers and musicians from Guru Ki Wadali in the Amritsar District in Punjab, India. Pyarelal Wadali, the youngest of the two died on March 9 this year at the age of 75 due to cardiac arrest. At present Lokkhindar Wadali- son of Puranchand Wadali is performing in the Wadali Brothers group.
Born in June 10, 1960, in Narayangonj, Abdul Hai Dewan is a baul singer. He took his lessons from Matal Kobi Razzak Dewan. Since then he is known as a ‘Half Metal’.
Satyaki Banerjee is an Indian Bengali composer. He is a part of an Anglo-Bengali band with members in Kolkata and London. He plays instruments like Dotara and sarod give his performance on both classical and folk.
The title sponsor the Dhaka international Folk Fest 2018 is Meril, the event is powered by Dhaka Bank Limited. Sun Communications Ltd is organising the event in association with Grameenphone and supported by Radhuni.
