Dhaka University (DU) authorities yesterday published the draft voter list of the long-awaited election to the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU). The union has remained non-functional for over two decades.
DU vice-chancellor Prof. Akhtaruzzaman published the draft list at a press conference in the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Digital Classroom, adjacent to the VC's office. Pro-VC Prof.
Nasreen Ahmad (education) and pro-VC Prof. Muhammad Samad (administration) were present along with the hall provosts.
“A list of 38,000 students has been prepared from information provided by the hall authority. The final list will be drawn up from these students according to the DUCSU election law,” the VC said.
Earlier, on September 15, after a meeting with student organisations, the VC at a press briefing had said that the DUCSU polls might be held by March 2019. He had expressed hope that the draft electoral roll would be prepared by October 2018.
The DUCSU polls have not been held in 27 years because of the apathy of successive university administrations and governments, reportedly in order to maintain their dominance on the campus.
This practice breached the provisions of Articles 4 and 20 of the Dhaka University Order 1973 and the fundamental rights ensured under Article 27 of the same order.
This violation renders all the senate committees and DU vice-chancellor elections in the past 27 years unconstitutional as five DU senate seats are reserved for student representatives. But they have remained vacant since the fall of the autocratic regime in 1990.
