The participants at a regional level views-sharing meeting with agriculture officers held in Rangpur recently said that the field level agriculturists, who are working in different agriculture-related organisations, should face growing challenges in agriculture sector to keep crop production increasing for ensuring food security. Agriculture experts and environmentalists are of the opinion that adaptation to global climate change and its adverse impacts on the agriculture sector is the prime need of the hour. Maximum priority should be given to increasing agro-production for food security.
It is encouraging to note that food production has increased remarkably in the country over the past few years. Population explosion and the shrinkage of arable lands could not leave any adverse impact on the food production. Farmers and others concerned and the modern method of food cultivation have contributed to this success. But there is no room for expressing complacency. Food production should be increased further for meeting the requirements. Bangladesh has made some meaningful efforts to minimise the adverse impact of climate change during the past few years. Apart from government initiatives, all stakeholders, including environmentalists, conscious people and NGOs should put in their utmost efforts to minimise the adverse impact of climate change.
All stakeholders must make the effort to produce more food to feed the growing population. The government should identify the problems facing the farmers and try to solve those on priority basis. Many farmers have to borrow money from moneylenders at high rate of interest. As a result, the cost of production of rice goes up. What is disappointing for the growers is that they do not always get the due price of their produced rice. If the growers lose interest in growing rice it will leave an adverse impact on the country’s overall food production.
It is the responsibility of agriculturists to reach the new agriculture technologies and crop varieties evolved by different agricultural research institutions and organisations to the farmers for increasing food output. They can organize discussion meetings and field day for farmers from time to time to make them aware of the recent developments in the agriculture sector. The field level agriculture officials can help resolving the problems, issues and challenges being faced by farmers to make agricultural activities successful. The government should provide farmers with bank loans on easy terms and conditions. Besides, farmers should be supplied with agricultural inputs like improved seeds, fertilisers and pesticides. There is no alternative to training for farmers on the modern method of cultivation.
