Vegetable prices slightly decline

After weeks of soaring prices of vegetables, city dwellers are feeling relief as the prices are now dropping due to increased supply. In the capital’s Kawran Bazar, Banani and Khilkhet retail markets, it was found that supply of daily essential vegetables has increased causing the price to fall a little, the prices of which had skyrocketed due to damaged crops and disrupted supply chains across the country caused by recent heavy rains and floods.
Abdul Alim, a vegetable vendor of Kawran Bazar whole sale market, said, “Rainy days are gone. Damaged crop-plants have started coming back to life as water left them after the flood. “If weather remains calm, the prices of the vegetables will continue to fall”, he added.
Bitter gourd was selling at Tk 50 yesterday which was in the previous week Tk 60- 70 per kg, brinjal at Tk 60 against Tk 75 to Tk 80 a kg a week ago.
Cucumber was being sold at Tk 50 a kg, green papaya at Tk 25, and ladies’ fingers at Tk 40, piece of both cauliflower and piece of cabbage at Tk30, per kg of radish at Tk 45 and potatoes were selling at Tk 21 to Tk 25 a kg   on the day.
Price of onions is still out of reach for the common people. Yesterday in the retail markets locally cultivated onions was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 90 while imported onions at Tk 75, despite the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has already started selling onion at Tk 50 per kg across the country ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
According to TCB data, onion is selling for Tk 60-80, a 21.74 per cent increase than the previous month.
Many city dwellers fear that the soaring onion prices will continue to
take a  heavy toll on them during Eid-ul-Azha since this spice item is heavily consumed during this festive occasion.  
The price of green chilli was same as the previous week. Yesterday it was selling at Tk130 to Tk 140. “The price is unchanged as the damaged plants are yet to fulfil the consumers’ demands.  Just 15 days ago it was selling between Tk 240 and Tk 250 but due to imports of green chilli from India the price has fallen
signifficaanly.
Price of broiler chicken has declined ahead of Eid al-Azha. Yesterday it was selling at Tk 120 to Tk 125, against Tk 140 in the previous week. Beef was selling at Tk 400 a kg.
Fish prices remained unchanged this week compare to the previous week. Medium-sized hilsa is being sold for between Tk 900 and Tk 950. Rohita was selling at Tk 250 to Tk 300 a kg, katla at Tk 250 to Tk 280 a kg and tilapia at Tk 110 to Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
