New look NCL rolls onto ground today

The 17th National Cricket League (NCL), the country’s old first class tournament rolls onto the ground today with four matches being held at different venue across the country. This is the first time, the NCL will be held in tier system as eight teams split into two tiers, based on the position in the previous edition. Rangpur, Dhaka Metro, Khulna and Dhaka Division have been drawn in the Tier-1 while Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal and Rajshahi are in the Tier-2.
In the first round of the tournament, Rangpur Division will take on Dhaka Metro at Shaheed Chandu Stadium (SCS) in Bogra and Khulna Division will compete against Dhaka Division at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium (SANS) in Khulna in the Tier-1. Rajshahi Division on the other hand will face-off Barisal Division at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium (SKS) in Rajshahi while Chittagong will lock horns with Sylhet Division at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium (KSOAS) in Fatullah in Tier-2.
Even though most of the national stars are busy with Bangladesh-A in India tour, the NCL will not loss its charm since some more stars are available to play this season. Shakib Al Hasan will be the centre of attraction because of his participation in the league after three years. This will be only second time he would play the NCL in last seven years. Since his first class debut in 2005, he played only 13 matches in the NCL. He played three matches in 2005, two in 2006, six in 2007, and one each in 2008 and 2012. Not only Shakib, the NCL will be also lit up by the likes of Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mustafizur Rahman and others. All of them hardly could get the opportunity to play the NCL due to their international commitment.
The NCL however will be the right platform for the players to have a longer version match practice ahead of the Test series against Australia in next October. Since there was no chance to have a match practice, the BCB arranged just one round of the NCL ahead of Eid vacation to give the players an opportunity to play at the request of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.
