Mohammed Jahir Rayhan and Shohagi Akhter of Bangladesh Navy clinched the 200 meters gold medal in the 14th City FC in the Summer Athletics when they finished with 21:70 seconds and 25.10 sec yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Jahir Rayhan, who qualified to run in the World Youth Athletics Championship and also qualified in the semifinal in the 400 meters held in Kenya in July last year, kept his supremacy in the 200 meters in the summer meet.

Jahir, who was injured in a road accident and was out of track for a long time, finished the 200 meters sprint on 21:70 leaving behind his challengers Shariful Islam of Army and his Naval compatriot Abdur Rouf who clocked 22:20 and 22:60 respectively.

Jahir, who won the gold medal of his favourites 400 meters in the opening day on Friday, also won the 200 meters when he wanted to run with record time, looked a bit discontent but expressed some of his solace winning the gold in both the events.

Jahir, in his reaction said, “For a long time I was ill and could not think that I would be able to do such a result, thanks to coach Kafee Bhai (Abdullah Hel Kafee), who nursed me properly and guided me perfectly.”

Replying to a query that what was the significant behind after such an accident he made super comeback, Jahir said, “Despite a big setback in my life, I could overcome all the hurdles because I did not leave my courage, was not downhearted, always had a lot of confidence to make comeback.”

“I had aspiration was to run with record timing but yesterday it was a rough weather.”

Jahir, who is eyeing to win a medal in the SA Games said, “It is my personal desire that I want to win medal in the SA Games and it is my personal commitment to bring a medal from SA Games.”

Shohagi Begum, who won the 200 meters gold after a hard contest of her Naval compatriot Shirin Akhter, reached the touchline with clocking 25:10 seconds to win the gold, while Shirin finished just 25:20 seconds for silver medal and Sharifa Khatun of Bangladesh Army won the bronze with taking 25:20 seconds.

Shohagi after beating Shirin said, “Actually it was my endurance to win 200 meters but wanted to finish with a better timing.”

“Atually yesterday (Friday) might be I would do better to win the gold in the 100 meters but after an hour of running in the 400 meters had to run in the 100, anyway in future I will win gold in this event and will try to win medal in the SA Games.”

Bangladesh Navy established the one-sided dominance in any national athletics meet for long time with clinching the top spot in the 14th City FC National Summer Athletics Championship with winning 39 medals including 13 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze while Bangladesh Army won 38 medals including 11 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze to be the second in the medal table.

Besides Navy and Army, Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratisthan (BKSP) stood third with winning three gold medals.

Shumi Akhter of Bangladesh Army adjudged the best women athlete after winning four gold medal in the 400 meter sprint, 800, 1500 and 3000 meters race.
