Voters and political analysists are sensing a triangular contest in the Basail municipality election, scheduled to be held on June 30.
Election campaigns of the candidates fielded by the Awami League (AL), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Krisak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) have gained momentum.
There is no rebel candidate of any of the major political parties.
The first election of newly constituted Basail municipality was held in 2013. Independent candidate Mojibor Rahman was elected mayor of the Basail municipality. BNP candidate Enamul Karim Autol came second, KSJL candidate Rahat Hasan Tipu came third and AL candidate Mosiur Rahman Khan came fourth.
Freedom fighter Abdur Rahim, president of the 'Upazila Nagorik Committee', is contesting the municipal election in the AL's ticket. He is also the president of the Basail Upazila Sramik Federation. He told The Independent that he was confident of securing a comfortable victory.
The BNP has nominated Enamul Karim Autol for contesting for the mayoral post. He was vice-president of the Basail Emdad-Hamida Degree College. He is also confident of winning the election.
The KSLJ, led by Abdul Kader Siddiki BU, nominated it upazila president, Rahat Hasan Tipu, to fight for the mayoral post. He also expressed optimism about winning the election.
In total, three candidates are contesting for the post of mayor, 37 for councillor posts and 14 for posts of reserved women councillors.
Hectic campaigning has reached a feverish pitch in the election area.
Most of the voters expressed their willingness to vote for the candidate who would work to weed out the drug menace and terrorism to promote all-out development.
Sources in the Election Office said there were 16,400 voters in the municipality area. Of them, 8,475 are women and 7,925 are men.
As many as 10 polling centres have been set up for smooth turnout of voters.
On Saturday, EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the EC gave importance to all types of elections. He was speaking at a meeting arranged at the Basail upazila auditorium.
DC Khan Mohammad Nurul Amin and EC additional secretary Moklesur Rahman, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
