The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has busted a group that prints fake currency notes in the capital. Ten members of the group have beem arrested and fake currency notes having a face value of Tk. 1 crore recovered from different parts of the capital. The group was intent on circulating fake money ahead of Eid.
Additional police commissioner Devdas Bhattacharya disclosed this at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre yesterday.
The arrested persons were identified as Rafiq, Zakir, Hanif, Rajan Sikder alias Raju, Khokan alias Shaon, Ripon, Monir, Sohrab, Jasim and Laboni. They were arrested on Thursday in the capital.
The DB also recovered a laptop, a printer, A4-size 16 pages covered with gelatin, 10 screen boards, 27 IPT white plastic clothes and other materials needed for printing fake notes from their possession.
Devdas Bhattacharya said Rafiq used to make the fake currency notes as a partner of Chhagir Master from Noakhali. At one stage, he himself started manufacturing counterfeit notes by purchasing the equipment and renting a house in the East Jurain Bou-Bazar area under Kadamtali police station in the capital.
Rafiq had been making fake currency notes by renting houses in different areas of Dhaka city, he added.
The DB chief said the cost of making Tk. 1 crore in false currency notes was about Tk. 10,000.
The fake notes were then sold for Tk. 14,000-15,000 to a seller, he added.
