Student without hands passes Dakhil exam by writing with leg

Bellal Akon, a physically disabled student without hands, has passed the Dakhil examination by writing his answer scripts with his legs, securing 3.85 points. Bellal is a student of the Umedpur Dakhil Madrasa in Nilganj Union, under the Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali district.

But Bellal, son of Khalil Akon and Hosne Ara Begum of Umedpur, is not satisfied with his performance; he had expected himself to do better.

His two legs, too, carry birth defects, but he overcame the disabilities to do write the exam answer scripts with his legs.  His mother is his biggest source of inspiration.

In the Ebtedaie and JDC exams, too, he had written with his leg, securing GPA-5.

Bellal's mother Hosne Ara Begum said the boy had no hands. At first, there was a lot of trouble, as some people spread various misconceptions in the village. As a result, Bellal was initially kept confined to the house.

But the inspiring counsel of a teacher prompted Hosne Ara Begum to arrange for the boy’s education.  He began by practising to write on a slate by holding a chalk between his toes. His mother taught him the early lessons before he was admitted to the Umedpur Madrasa, about a kilometre away from home.

Bellal said, “I have got GPA-5 in the PSC and JDC exams by writing with the right feet. But the success cannot ensure continuity of studies because of physical obstacles and the financial crisis in a poor family. But I am crossing the secondary level by overcoming these hurdles. I want to do better in the higher secondary examination.”

Bellal's father Khalil Akon said, “I am unable to say that Bellal is disabled. He has created his own place in society with his talent and expertise. I do not want to stop Bellal's studies.”
