Co-curricular activities: Integral part of education

Co-curricular activities: Integral part of education

I am surprised at guardians’ thought that only bookish knowledge ensures the success of a student where co-curricular activities is a part and parcel of education.

There lies no scope of arguing with the fact that co-curricular activities play an immense role in flourishing a student’s talent. The schedules of students are filled with so many things that it is quite impossible for a student to manage time for co-curricular activities. The guardians only notice the outward product of education. They do not understand that a huge difference lies between an erudite person and a real human being. According to them, co-curricular activity is not only an impediment, but also wastes time in a student’s busy schedule, which is full of study, study and study. Here are a few points that are enough to prove co-curricular activities do really take part in flourishing talent:

Debate: Debate means an argument or formal discussion expressing different opinions. In some schools, a number of debating clubs are organised under the leadership of senior students. In this regard, the role of Ideal School and College is praiseworthy.

According to Abdur Rahman Rohan, a student of class 10 and former president of Ideal Debating Club, debate teaches us leadership. Debate is such a competition where we can discover ourselves, he said. Few other members of the club expressed the same opinion, saying it may kill some time, but they maintain a daily schedule to overcome that. All members of the club gather after school hours to practise. Almost the same scenario is seen at Government Laboratory High School, Rajuk Uttara Model College and Viqarunnisa Noon School and College.

Games and Sports: Generally, all teenagers like to play after school. But the guardians forcefully send them to different coaching centres in the afternoon. There is no doubt parents do this with a noble wish. But excess of anything ends badly.

I think cadet colleges in our country may be ranked first in the list of providing sports facilities for its students. Besides, Adamjee Cantonment Public School and Shahid Bir Uttam Lt Anowar Girls’ College are also advanced in this area. Inter-school handball, volleyball and basketball meets are also held among students of different institutions.

Volunteering Activities: Students in their adolescence should join BNCC (Bangladesh National Cadet Corps), Scouts, or Girl Guides to gain leadership qualities. In natural disasters, the activities of Rover Scouts are really commendable.

Facing different real life situations, they become matured enough to lead their juniors.

The participation of youths in co-curricular activities will surely make their lives more enjoyable. The great poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore did not get any formal education. But people are remembered for their creativity, not academic qualifications. And the mainspring of co-curricular activities is to increase creativity in the minds of youths.
