Doctor of the poor laid to rest in Madhupur jungle

Dr Adrick Baker, popularly known as ‘goriber dactar’, was laid to rest in Madhupur jungle as his last wish on Wednesday. He breathed his last at 2.15 PM on Tuesday at the hospital founded by in Madhupur. He was 74. Thousands of people, including Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Md Mahbub Hossain, founder of Gona Sashtha Kendra Dr Zafarullah, upazila chairman of Madhupur Sarower Alam Khan Abu, many doctors from Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensingh and local people bid adieu to the ‘gariber dactar’ with tears at his funeral on Wednesday.
Dr Baker was born in New Zealand in 1941. Among four brothers and two sisters he was second son of their parents. He obtained MBBS degree from Otago Medical College in 1965 and completed post- graduation degree in Australia and England on tropical medicine, Guiney and child health. He served at the war ravaged Vietnam up to 1975. He went to Papua Neughini and Zambia, but could not settle his mind. He went to USA after being attacked with jaundice. On recovery from jaundice he came to Bangladesh in 1979. He served in Meherpur Christian hospital for two years and worked in Mirzapur kumuddini hospital for eight months. He wanted to serve the poor and village people. He went to Madhupur and settled in Kaliakor village situated inside the jungle of Madhupur, about 25 kms from Upazila headquarters. He learned Bangla for one year in a church of
Madhupur. Dr. Baker used to give free treatment to the poor people. He had established diabetes department, TB department, neo-netal department, diarrhea department and other departments on an area of four acres of land. He established the hospital in 23 mud huts and arranged 40 beds. He rendered medical services to 100 outward patients every day. Dr. Baker, a bachelor, trained up about 93 local poor youths – boys and girls – to become his assistants. He served the poor people of Madhupur for the last 36 years. He died at the hospital following a cardiac arrest. He was buried beside the hospital on August 2.  Dr. Abdur Razzaque MP, Upazila chairman of Madhupur Sarower Alam Khan Abu expressed deep shock at his sad demise.
