Project Pothchola presents ‘Mogoj Dholai’

In the month of International Mother Language Day, an innovative book reading event titled ‘Mogoj Dholai’ was organized by Project Pothchola—an initiative by Bandhu Foundation, to enlighten the children through reading and creativity. The event took place on February 24 at the LEEDO, peace home for street children, at Basila of the capital.

A number of 51 children--aged between 10 and 16--from different underprivileged backgrounds participated in the event. Alongside the children of Project Pothchola, other children were from different organizations, such as LEEDO, Lal Shobuj School, Procheshta Foundation, School of Ghashful and Oporajeyo Bangla.

A week before the event, the children were provided with two interesting books named ‘School er Naam Pothochari’ written by Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and Jonathan Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ to read.

During the event, quizzes from both books were taken by a panel of judges. Later, a craft activity took place where the children made different types of stuffs using their imagination with homemade Play Doh. The activities of the event were planned in such ways that engaged the children in brainstorming and constructive mood in order to make them reading an overall entertaining and memorable experience for them. Later, prizes were given to the participating children to recognize their participation on the basis of quiz and craft activities.

About the goal of the event, Director of Project Pothchola, Sadia Rahman said to DhakaLive, “We believe imagination is more important than knowledge. If we can sow the seeds of wild imagination through books, the children will become unstoppable. We feel privileged that five other organizations participated in the programme and made it a success.”

To note, Project Pothchola has started its journey in July, 2014, with an objective to work effectively upon the mental growth of the children of sex-workers to help them grow up as strong and independent individuals so that they can cope up with whatever challenges they might face in life. Project Pothchola is a long term project run by the Bandhu Foundation in collaboration with Hazera Begum from the foundation ‘Shishuder Jonno Amra’. In order to make a platform to interact with the children and to build sensible individuals multiple monthly sessions are taken which are equipped with visual aids on different topics.
