Question paper leak : the authorities in a quandary

Question paper leak : the authorities in a quandary

Faced with the scourge of leaked questions for almost all competitive and academic exams, the authorities in desperation decided to slow down and block the internet, though eventually, better sense prevailed with the scrapping of the plan. We commend the government for acting with reason and not driven by a blind fear of the Internet. The leaking of questions has been a headache for the administration for some time and, it appears that a very powerful group is active in making the question papers public, putting the credibility of the entire academic system under question. We are not certain, whether there is a deep rooted conspiracy behind this, but at any cost the pernicious culture has to be countered with all the might of the authority.

Reportedly, several people in connection with such dubious practices have been apprehended though there is a public feeling that the response from the law needs to be more robust. Unless there is some severe punishment meted out to the ones detained, a lesson will not be learnt. It would be incorrect to only point at external unscrupulous elements since such operations cannot be carried out without insider collusion. Obviously, the motive is to undermine the system, ensuring a fast buck for certain people. Stopping or slowing the net is a preposterous idea to counter such aberrations; the net does not leak question papers, it is merely used to disseminate what is already out. One logic can be that restricting the net can prevent everyone from knowing the questions. However, almost inevitably, a particular group will always get the leaked papers, which is even more unfair.

Any attempt to tackle this has to be at the root, where the dishonest practice is conceived. The government needs to immediately form a special department aimed at curbing this abhorrent activity which is insidiously creeping into our current day ethos. If the relevant authorities show the same sort of determination as displayed in snubbing out even the remotest possible flame of extreme radicalism, there is no reason why this practice cannot be uprooted. From a moral angle, leaking of questions is indicative of the deeper malaise this society is in with corruption tainting lives and the young growing up with a depraved ideology, in which, circumventing laws, rules, steps and regulations often happen with impunity by those who have wealth and power. The handling of the question leaking problem therefore has several dimensions: one which involves stern action without compromises while the other involves profound reflection of an unconscionable credo which seems to be taking hold.
