Flood hampers academic activities in northern dists

Educational activities of around 40,000 students in flood affected areas of six northern districts, including Bogra, have been seriously hampered. District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) in Bogra Hossain Ali and other government officials said more than 350 educational institutions have been submerged in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibhandha, Bogra, Sirajganj and Naogaon districts. Most of students in flood affected areas have stopped attending classes after inundation of their institutions.

Shariakandi Upazila Primary Education Officer Kamrul Hassain said he has to close down 74 primary schools in the upazila due to the flood. “But, we have made alternative arrangement to take classes for students preparing for Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Primary School Certificate (PSC) examinations” said Kamrul Hassain. About 9000 primary school students of the upazila are not regular in attending classes, he added.
Jue Akte, headmaster of Chandonbaisha Primary School, said authorities are forced to suspend classes because the school premises are totally under flood water now.
Shapwan Kumar Ray Chowdhury, DPEO in Kurigram, said 176 primary schools in the district have been
inundated. The academic activities of more than 20,000 primary students have been seriously hampered due to the flood; and most of the students are not coming to schools for the lack of communication.
