Floriculturists of Godkhali, the ‘flower capital of Bangladesh’ in Jessore’s Jhikorgacha upazila, are expecting to earn Tk 30–35 crore from the sale of flowers ahead of the three big events in February.

These three events—Pahela Falgun, Valentine’s Day on the 14th, and International Mother Language Day on the 21st—spark a huge demand for flowers. According to farmers and traders, there has been a surge this year in the sale of flowers, which started on Thursday.

The wholesale flower market in Godkhali caters to the demand of 52 districts of the country. After meeting the local demand, the flowers of the upazila are exported to the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, India, and South Korea. The farmers of Godkhali and Panisara unions cultivate flowers after harvesting rice and jute.

Around 15 types of flowers, including rose, gerbera, gladiolus, tuberose, and marigold, have been cultivated on 1,500 to 2,000 hectares this year. Md Jalil, a floriculturist, said it costs about Tk. 4 to grow one rose, and they earn about Tk. 8–10 per rose. So, the profit is quite good.

Abul Bashar, another floriculturist, said he has cultivated tuberose, double tuberose, hybrid tuberose, rose, gerbera, marigold, and gladiolus on his 18-bigha land. Bashar said he used to suffer losses earlier, but not anymore.  This month, he expects to sell flowers worth Tk. 1.50–2 lakh.

Farmers of the upazila started growing flowers in 1982.

Abdur Rahim, president of the Bangladesh Flowers Society, said there are around 25,000 floriculturists across the country, and around 6,000–7,000 farmers are involved in floriculture in Jessore.

“The farmers expect to sell flowers worth Tk. 30–35 crore this month. If the transportation system can be developed, the flowers can be sent without much damage.

The government can earn huge revenue from the sale,” he added.
