Sarmin Soma, a fourth-year accounting student of Jagannath University (JnU), could not follow an important lecture in the classroom, even though the teacher was standing barely a few metres in front of her.
“It was my last class of the seventh semester, but I could not follow it properly because there was a cultural programme on the university premises. They were using electronic sound amplifiers and the noise was excruciating,” Soma complained.
Echoing the complaint, several JnU students said such programmes, mostly political and cultural ones, were frequently held during regular class hours. These demonstrations, processions and cultural activities generated a high level of noise and affected academic activities in the university, they added.
The prime venues for such programmes are Shahid Minar, Sculpture premises, Kathal tolla and the area in front of the BBA faculty.
In fact, the Arts Faculty has recently written to the university authorities to prohibit such programmes during class hours. “We were holding a meeting at the Arts Faculty when we were irked by a noisy programme on the campus. It was really very disturbing. We issued a letter to protest against the annoyingly high noise generated by the programme,” said Prof. Md. Selim of the Arts Faculty.
On their part, the university authorities expressed helplessness as there were no specific rules and also not enough space to host such programmes.
When asked, the proctor said: “We usually try not to allow cultural activities and shooting during class. But we have no control over programmes by political parties or organisations.”
