A Film Apprenticeship Programme of ULAB

ULAB Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) department carries   out an extra-curricular programme for the ones who are much enthusiastic about the creation and aesthetics of film production. The programme is called the Film Apprenticeship Programme and is commonly known as ‘Cinemascope’. However, this is basically a platform for those who want to practice advanced elements of film production, other than just shooting and bringing out a final product. It is one of Apprenticeship Programmes of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) like, ULAB Radio CampBuZz!, The ULABian etc.
With the aim of watching, reading, analysing and making films, a group of students enrol into ULAB Film Apprenticeship Programme – CinemaScope. Apart from productions there are three dedicated teams inside cinemascope – the production team, the combined screening and the workshop team and the publication team. CinemaScope solely stands for studying films. Nazmul Hasan Shukorno, a faculty of Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) department, is the CEO of CinemaScope, where Mohammad Shazzad Hossain, another faculty of the same department, is the advisor of it.
The advisor of CinemaScope, Senior Lecturer of Media Studies and Journalism, Mohammad Shazzad Hossain said, “ULAB has different apprentice programmes for students’ active learning purpose, where CinemaScope is one of those. As ULAB is one of the pioneers for Media Schools in this country, it is always welcome active learning in different sectors of Media. Where CinemaScope is one example.”
“Students are getting opportunities for making films, writing for films and others by enrolling with this programme. Every semester ULAB authority is providing fund around Tk. 50,000 for making film. For this opportunity students need to submit a proposal for making a film. And from those proposals, CinemaScope authority select one for making a film for that particular semester”, he added.
According to the advisor, each semester the students of CinemaScope put together their own magazine supplement to the ULABian student newspaper, where the magazine name is CinePedia. Here the students write about films. The activities that the Film Apprenticeship Programme has carried out, there is a series of such events to be mentioned like, their first visit to Chittagong creating a poetic documentary on the Halda river in Chittagong, named ‘Halda: River of Mystery’, in association with the Goethe Institute in 2011. They also made ULAB Promotional documentary in 2012, which was screened at the 2nd convocation of ULAB. Also they have made ULAB Library documentary in 2013.
As studying Cinema is one of the main objectives of CinemaScope, they organise several film screening events and workshops where they study films sitting altogether and do involve in an open discussion platform to the film enthusiasts. So far some productions of CinemaScope has been the promotional film of ULAB, the documentary on the library of ULAB and “18 Hours in 180 Seconds” which is a time-lapse documentary on the transportation system of Dhaka, that won the first prize in the STAR UIU Documentary Festival 2013.
