Two Bangladeshi films to be screened at Public Library today

Two Bangladeshi films—‘Chitkini’, directed by Sajedul Awwal, and ‘Shohagir Goyna’, directed by Lata Ahmed—will be screened today at the Public Library Auditorium, as part of the ongoing nine-day 16th Dhaka International Film Festival 2018.

Sajedul Awwal’s film ‘Chitkini’ (‘Rest in Silence’) will be screened today at 5:30pm, while Lata Ahmed’s film ‘Shohagir Goyna’ (‘Shohagi’s Ornament’) is scheduled to be screened at 7:30pmin the ‘Bangladesh Panorama’ category.

Organised by Rainbow Film Society, the 16th edition of the festival was inaugurated by finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith as the chief guest on Friday. Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu and India’s high commissioner, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, were also present as special guests at the main auditorium of the Bangladesh National Museum in the capital.

Films from several countries are also scheduled to be screened in other categories as part of the festival today. In the ‘Cinema of the World’ section, Karim Sayad’s ‘Of Sheep and Men’ from Qatar, Arman T. Riahi’s ‘The Migrumpies’ from Austria, Arild Andersen’s ‘Handle With Care’ from Norway, Ozgur Sevimli’s ‘Murtaza’ from Turkey and in the ‘Asian Competition’ section Vatche Boulghourjian’s ‘Tramontane’ from Lebanon will be screened at the Main Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum.

In the ‘Women Filmmakers’ section, ‘Torn Love’ by Nurdan Tumbek Tekeoglu, ‘Antiheroina’ by Menchu Esteban, ‘Anna’ by Petra Priborska, ‘November Will be May’ by Yana Lekarska, ‘Israfil’ by Ida Panahandeh, ‘Maki’ by Naghmeh Shirkhan and ‘Chronicles of Hari’ by Ananya Kasaravalli will be screened at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the Bangladesh National Museum.

At the venue of the Public Library Auditorium, along with the two Bangladeshi films, two films from Iran—titled ‘Soyuq’ (‘Coldness’) directed by Bahram and Bahman Haj Abol Loo (Ark) and ‘Walking on String’, directed by Ahmad Reza Motamedi, and another film from Mongolia titled ‘Shift’, directed by Nyamdavaa Baasansuren, will be screened.

Alliance Française de Dhaka, the Russian Cultural Center and Star Cineplex are also included as venues of the festival.

During the festival, some 216 films from 64 countries are scheduled to be screened. The festival features an Asian competition section. The six other categories for the participating films are: ‘Retrospective’, ‘Cinema of the World’, ‘Children’s section’, ‘Women Filmmakers’, ‘Short and Independent Films section’ and ‘Spiritual Films section’. Along with these, ‘Bangladesh Panorama’ has been included in this year’s festival to support and extend the reach of Bangladeshi films on the global stage.
