Rehabilitation of prisoners thru' skill development stressed

RANGPUR: Speakers at a meeting here yesterday stressed providing necessary assistance to inmates in the jails in ensuring their legal rights along with skill development for their proper rehabilitation after release, reports BSS. They put emphasis on providing jobs or creating opportunity for self-employments after providing necessary training on various trades to inmates in the jails or after their release for skill development to bring them back to the mainstream society. RDRS Bangladesh organised the views-sharing meeting on “Rehabilitation of distressed prisoners” under the “Improvement of the Real Situation of Overcrowding in Prisons in Bangladesh (IRSOP)” Project at the conference room of the deputy commissioner. The Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh and Deutsche Gesellschaff Fur International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ-German Development Cooperation) has been jointly implementing the IRSOP project.
The main objective of the project is to reduce the number of prisoners in the jails under the project through extending all-out cooperation by all involved with the whole judicial process for them and safeguarding their legal process.
Deputy Commissioner (acting) Tanima Tasmin attended and addressed the day-long meeting as the chief guest with Additional District Magistrate ADM) Priyosindhu Talukder in the chair. Senior Programme Manager (Women Rights) of RDRS Bangladesh, one of the IRSOP Project implementing partner organisations, Mezbahun Nahar delivered welcome speech in the meeting narrating objectives of the project and its ongoing activities.
National Project Coordinator of IRSOP Project of GIZ from Dhaka Mohammad Saifuzzaman moderated the meeting. Mohammad Saifuzzaman of GIZ and Mezbahun Nahar of RDRS Bangladesh jointly delivered the keynote power point presentation on the IRSOP Project activities and success achieved so far.
Representative of GIZ from Dhaka Angela Khan, District Ansar-VDP Commander Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth Development (DYD) Mizanur Rahman, Principal of Technical Training Institute Lutfar Rahman, Senior Jail Super Ratna Roy, Deputy Director of Narcotics Control Department Dilara Hossain, addressed.
Senior Reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mamun Islam and Member-secretary of the District Community Policing Coordination Committee Shushanto Bhowmick also addressed, among others.
