Savar tanneries also degrading environment

Savar tanneries also degrading environment

It is sad to note that we do not see much sincere efforts of the relevant people in the government to protect the rivers around the Dhaka city. In absence of proper measures, solid as well as liquid wastes are directly being dumped into the rivers such as Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Turag, Balu, Dhaleshwri, etc. For treating wastes of tanneries at Savar, it is vital to have a Centrally Effluent Treatment Plant. But according to a report published in this newspaper yesterday, this vital piece of infrastructure at Savar could not be constructed yet.

There tannery wastes are being dumped under the open sky and they spread stink in the areas around, degrading the environment even more. The pollution of the Buriganga that used to be caused by tanneries at Hajaribagh in the capital could be stopped because of shifting of tanneries from there, but now the environment of Savar has become vulnerable as untreated tannery water is flowing into the nearby agricultural lands and wetlands, creating health hazards.

A number of 102 tanneries are now fully performing their activities, but the CETP for treating effluent of these tanneries is not yet completed. The owners of the tanneries complain that the set-up of the tanneries is ‘faulty’. Moreover, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has not set up the chrome refinery unit for dumping solid wastes.

Not surprisingly, absence of the vital infrastructure is taking a huge toll of the overall environment of the area. But as usual, the concerned people of the relevant ministry are showing their neglect to these environmentally vital matters.

We are living at a time when environmental alarm is sounded all over the world. In Bangladesh also, environmentalists are crying hoarse for protecting the nature in which we live our each moment. The rivers in and around the Dhaka city have become the centre of attention of all people, not just the environmentalists. Our healthy life is already at stake due to the neglect which is being shown to the precious environment.

The government is allocating fund each year for the protection of the environment; there are also charted policies to protect the environment of Dhaka, especially the vital rivers. There are relevant people who are appointed to deliver in that direction. Despite all this, the environmental   state that we are left with is unacceptable.
