Candidates are in hectic campaign as they try their luck to bag the maiden election to the Bakshiganj municipality in Jamalpur district. The election is scheduled for December 28.
The candidates are wooing voters going door to door and offering lofty promises to them.
Besides, to bring the people’s mandate in favour, leaders from the central level of most major parties are also conducting campaigns for their respective candidates.
In the poll, six candidates are contesting for the mayoral post while there are 58 candidates for nine councilor posts.
Besides, 21 candidates are vying for three reserved seats for women.
A total 30,598 voters, of whom 15,077 are male and 15,521 female, will franchise their voting rights for the first time since Bakshiganj was declared a municipality on February 5, 2013.
For the mayoral polls, Awami League nominated Shahina Begum is confronting four of whom three are from her own party, while BNP nominated Fakruzzaman Motin is the only candidate from the party.
The three rebels who are vying for the mayoral polls from Awami League are Nazrul Islam Saudagar, Anwar Hossain Talukdar Bahadur and M Nuruzzaman.
