Physician burnt to death, wife injured

A physician was burnt to death while his wife sustained serious burn injuries at a house in Khulshi area of the city yesterday morning. The physician Imtiaz Karim, 50, died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and his wife Sabrina Selina, 45, has been shifted to Dhaka for better treatment. Nizam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Khulshi police station, told The Independent that the couple was living at a house in Khulshi area of the city. The neighbours rescued the couple in critical injuries after hearing their scream for help. It is not still clear how the fire originated, the OC added. Later, the couple was rushed to the CMCH in critical condition. Nayek Md Jahangir of CMCH police outpost said the couple received 90 per cent burn injuries to their bodies. Both of them suffered burns in their respiratory organs. Imtiaz died at CMCH around 2pm while his wife was shifted to DMCH for better treatment, said Dr S Khaled, assistant professor of Burn Unit in CMCH. Meanwhile, Sabrina Selina, wife of the physician, is the sister-in-law of state minister for land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Zabed.
