Autism is a disorder, not a disease. An autistic person should be loved, protected and nurtured, said speakers at a seminar yesterday. People with autism do work as if they are passing leisure time. They never tell lies and don’t know how to betray others. They are loyal to work and have full focus on a work. So, all they need is love, protection and care, said Sajida Rahman Danny, executive director, Parents Forum for Differently Able (PFDA), a vocational training centre.
The seminar, “Training and Employment of Autistic Youth in the RMG industry”, was organised by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Saima Hossain, chairperson, Global Autism-Bangladesh, was present as chief guest at the programme presided over by BGMEA President Atiqul Islam.
It was at Saima Hossain’s initiative that Bangladesh hosted the first-ever global conference on autism in 2011, drawing leaders like India’s Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
“Bangladesh has developed from many angles, but little has been done with autism. There will be pilot projects to create jobs for the people with disability. If job opportunities are created for them in the garments sector, our country will be a model for the whole world,” said Saima Hossain.
