Although two years have already gone by, Chittagong city chapter of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) could neither upgrade its 11-member committee into a full-fledged one nor hold the councils, keeping its organisational activities in an awful mess. It may be mentioned that the incumbent 11-member convening committee of the JCD was announced on July 21, 2013. As per the constitution of the organisation, the duration of the committee is two years and the duration expired on July 21 this year. However, the incumbent committee failed to hold councils in all the ward and thana units in the past two years. Meanwhile, the 11-member partial committee has also triggered frustration and discontent among the leaders and activists within the party. Many ‘post-aspirant’ senior and mid-level leaders have expressed their resentment and frustration over non-formation of the full-fledged city unit committee in two years. Eventually, ‘the deprived’ leaders are abstaining themselves from the party programmes.
The leaders of the organisation said that they could not upgrade the 11-member committee into a full-fledged one as the feuding top brass of the BNP failed to reach a consensus in this regard. The bickering among the top brass of the BNP became evident once again soon after the city JCD’s (Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal) new committee was announced on July 21, 2013. Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, president of Chittagong city BNP vehemently opposed the newly declared JCD committee as his favourites were left out.
Speculation is rife that Dr Shahadat, general secretary of Chittagong city BNP, had played a pivotal role in forming the JCD’s new city committee without any consultation with Khasru. Demanding cancellation of the JCD’s partial 11-member committee, the left-out aspirants went on a rampage at BNP’s Chittagong city unit office at Nasiman Bhaban, locking into a clash with their rivals.
To settle the internal dispute in the BNP’s city unit, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on August 21, 2014, sat in a negotiation meeting with the three feuding leaders --- Abdullah Al Noman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Dr Shahadat Hossain. During the meeting held at the former Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan’s Gulshan residence, Khasru proposed to dissolve the JCD’s Chittagong city committee while Noman and Shahadat called for retaining the committee leaving an option for accommodating the left-out aspirants. However, the issue had remained unresolved in the past two years. Contacted, Gazi Md Siraj Ullah, president of Chittagong city JCD, told The Independent that they had been running organisational activities in an unfavourable political atmosphere. “The ruling AL government has filed so many fabricated cases against my fellows. I have been accused in 22 cases after January 5 this year. However, we do not feel down and have undertaken so many initiatives to rejuvenate the party rank and file. We have so far formed committees in 15 wards and 11 thanas,” added Siraj. Belayet Hossain Bulu, secretary of Chittagong city JCD, however, could not come up with any tentative timetable when the council of the city JCD would be held.
