Earlier in 2012, Rapid Action Battalion rescued three Bengal tiger cubs after a raid in a house in Shymoli in Dhaka. The two-month-old cubs were captured from Sundarbans. Two traffickers were arrested in connection with illegal wildlife trade. The trafficker’s son Zakir Hossain told the press that the cubs had been brought in for the then chief of wildlife section of the forest department. The official, however, refuted the claim and said he was not involved in any wildlife crime.
For trafficking and poaching the tiger population in the Sunderbans forest dropped to just over 100 in 2015 from an estimated 440. The exotic animals are poached for their colourful hide or skin.
