Hi-tech parks

Hi-tech parks

The State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has said 28 hi-tech parks are going to be established throughout the country aiming to enrich the country’s ICT sector. He voiced it while visiting the under-construction works of Rajshahi Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Hi-tech Park on Friday afternoon. That the present government is pledge-bound to promote the ICT sector for overall development of the country is not new, and we welcome the state minister’s renewed pledge in this regard.

In the age of information, the decision is indeed an important one. In the Western world, hi-tech parks are usually models to capitalize on knowledge in national and regional development, and are effective instruments in the transfer of technology, job creation and attraction of companies with high added value. The parks accommodate small and medium-sized enterprise and promote innovation and technological development by SMEs. With passing time their areas of function are expanding too.

Worldwide hi-tech parks have significantly contributed in several countries’ economic and technological advancement. Moreover, the parks will play a key role in building Digital Bangladesh, besides accelerating the national economic development by expanding hi-tech, hardware, and IT industries. Such parks also invite room for investments by foreign companies.

Currently the Rajshahi Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Hi-tech Park is being built on 31 acres of plot at Bulanpur area with an estimated cost of Taka 231 crore to make Rajshahi as the city of technology. Its implementation works are expected to complete by December, 2018. More than 14,000 unemployed youths of both sexes are expected to get employment. The park intends to create atmosphere for establishing industries on ICT, engineering, electronics, telecommunication and biotechnology. Besides, more avenues of employment for the ICT people will be created in this venture. Potentials for job creation, economic growth, innovation, and new businesses are clearly evident from the project. It is only good that the scale of development in the stated fields would become bigger and wider once the parks will be established.

In similar tracks with other countries, we expect these parks also to focus on establishing industries on engineering, electronics, telecommunication and biotechnology.
