Tamabil Land Port along Gowainghat border was inaugurated in Sylhet yesterday to boost up business and commerce and roads communications with India, reports BSS. Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan inaugurated official activities of the port.
Chaired by Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman Tapan Kumar Chakravorty, the inaugural ceremony was attended by Sylhet-4 constituency lawmaker Imran Ahmed, Internal Resources Division Senior Secretary and National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman and Shipping Secretary Md Abdus Samad, among others.
“Bangladesh and India both will be benefited from the Tamabil Land Port.  Business and commerce will be accelerated and it will help increase employment opportunities and reduce poverty at Tamabil,” Muhith told the inaugural function.
He said the country has been achieving huge economic progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as “We have already attained the status of lower-middle income country.”
“A total of 11 land ports have been opened in last nine years of the Awami League government and two more will be opened,” Shajahan Khan said, adding that 10 more container ports will be set up.
Tamabil Land Port was built at a cost of Tk 69.26 crore on around 23.72 acres of land at Tamabil Zero Point of Gowainghat upazilas in Sylhet.
Shajahan Khan laid the foundation stone of the land port on May 8, 2015 which was earlier Tamabil Customs Station.
