MPO perks for 7,000 school, college teachers soon

The government will enlist over 7,000 school and college teachers under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme soon. Sources in the education ministry and the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) said the teachers will be from the subjects of computer, information and communication technology (ICT), and science. They will be from educational institutions that are already MPO-listed and should be appointed after November 13, 2011.

In a letter signed by the deputy secretary of the education ministry, Nusrat Jabeen Banu, on October 3, the DSHE was asked to send all necessary information about the teachers.

According to the letter, 1,547 teachers will be taken from computer and ICT departments, 252 from science, and 5,600 teachers who were appointed in additional class sections and departments or subjects after November 13, 2011.

Following a letter from the finance ministry on September 20, the education ministry has sought all information about such teachers, including the name and type of the institution, the subject, salary scale, grade, etc.

The education officer (secondary-1) of DSHE, Chandra Shekhar Halder, said: “We have received the ministry’s letter in this regard. We are preparing a reply. Within a day or two, we will send it to the zonal office or the district education office to provide all necessary information about the teachers.”

“We will seek a timeframe for sending the information. After that, we will send the information to the ministry,” he added.

Many teachers said the MPO facility may have come after a long time, but they are now hopeful that it will help them financially and they will not need to think about other means of income.

However, many school and college teachers are still not getting the MPO facility as their educational institutions are still out of its ambit. They hoped that their educational

institutions will come under the ambit of MPO, as many institutions have applied to the ministry since 2010 for the facility. But there has been no such move yet.

Ministry and DSHE sources said 10,000–12,000 educational institutions have applied to the education ministry, but no progress has been made in this regard. In fact, the sources admitted that there is no immediate chance of non-government educational institutions being brought under the MPO facility.

The education ministry is carrying out talks with the finance ministry for the money needed for offering MPO facility to the educational institutions, they added.

The sources also said that there is no possibility of offering the MPO facility to more educational institutions this year. But it was learnt that there is a possibility

of bringing some educational institutions under the facility next year.
