Mobile courts in Faridpur, Chandpur, Rajbari sentenced 52 fishermen to different term of jail for netting hilsa defying a government ban on catching the national delicious fish.
Our Faridpur correspondent reports: A mobile court headed by executive magistrate Sajal Chandra Shil conducted several drives in the Padma River at Dhewkhali, Akoter Char, Char Nasarpur and Diara Narikelbaria in Sadarpur upazila on Friday morning and arrested 41 fishermen and recovered 12 mounds of hilsa and eight lakh meters current net. Later, the mobile court sentenced them to 15-day imprisonment each, said Upazila Fisheries Officer Fatema Akter.
The seized fish were distributed among orphanages of the upazila and the fishing nets were burnt as per order of the court.
Our Chandpur correspondent says: A mobile court led by Matlab Uttar UNO and Executive Magistrate Sharmin Akter yesterday afternoon jailed four fishermen to one month jail each for netting mother hilsa in the Meghna River in Shatnol area defying ban.
A joint team comprising fisheries officials, river police and Coastguard members conducted a drive in the Meghna River and held them along with 1000 metres of current nets, said Matlab Uttar Upazila Fisheries Officer Mohammad Kaiyum.
The arrestees were identified as Shahjahan Bepari, 50, Swapan Prodhan, 28, Majnu Sarker, 35, of Lalpur area under Chandpur Sadar upazila and Billal Hossain, 34, hail from Chuadanga.
The seized nets were burnt.
In Rajbari: A mobile court here on Friday night sentenced seven fishermen to 18-day imprisonments for catching hilsa in the Padma River defying the ongoing ban, reports UNB.
The convicts were identified as Rana Molla, 20, Najem Uddin Molla, 25, Hanif Molla, 55, residents of Memberpara of Goalundo Upazila, Billal Molla, 24, of Notun Para, Monjhu Kha, 42, of East Ujhanchar, Mokhles Kha, 34, of Easr Ujhanchar and Tajel Sheikh, 30, of Habib Mandalpara. A joint team of local police and fisheries department conducted the drive on Friday night and arrested them.
The seized hilsa were distributed among the local orphans.
The government has imposed the ban on catching, selling, transformation and hoarding of hilsa from Oct 1 to Oct 22 to boost its production through protection of mother fish during its peak breeding season.
