A two-day commemorative programme to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Abul Kalam Mohammed Zakaria will begin at Bakultala of Charukala, University of Dhaka today.
The book committee for a publication on Dhaka archaeological heritages has organised the memorial programme featuring discussion, photography and book exhibitions, traditional folk performances and others.
Noted translators, artists, researchers, architects and family members will recall the memory of Abul Kalam Mohammad Zakaria and discuss on his life and work. The chairman of the book committee, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique will preside over the event.
On the opening day of the programme, today, folk singer Farida Parveen and flute player Gazi Abdul Hakim will perform to pay tribute to AKM Zakaria. Eminent pala singer Islamuddin Palakaar and his troupe from Kishoreganj will perform pala named ‘Gazi Kalu Champaboti’, while Toser Mondal and his troupe from Natore will come up their performance ‘Jogir Gaan’ in the evening.
Tomorrow, Mongol Mia Gayen and his troupe from Bikrampur will perform ‘Gazi’r Pot Gaan’ on the closing day, while Chann Mia Gayeen and his troupe from Manikganj will perform ‘Gazir Gaan’ on the same day.
Abul Kalam Muhammed Zakaria, an eminent scholar, archaeologist and also a former secretary of the cultural affairs ministry, passed away on February 24, 2016, at the age of 97, He was the former president of the editorial board of a committee to publish books on the architectural sites in Dhaka.
Abul Kalam Muhammed Zakaria (known as AKM Zakaria) received Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his contribution to the field of research, while he received the Bangla Academy Award and Asiatic Society Man of the Year Gold Medal in his lifetime.
