Kirtipasha Zamindar Bari

Kirtipasha Zamindar Bari

When travelling becomes a passion, nothing can resist it. Still, I was fortunate that it is very easy to access Kirtipasha Zamindar Bari from Jhalakathi town.

The zamindar bari (landlord’s house) is located about 5 km northwest of Jhalakathi. I took an electric auto-rickshaw (battery driven vehicle) from the town to reach the village. Then I started walking, definitely with a feeling of excitement, towards the century-old zamindar bari. Finally, my walk came to an end and I found myself just in front of my destination.

The palatial house was initially built by Zamindar Ram Jiban Sen in the early part of the 19th century. Later, Zamindar Kirtinarayan Pasha constructed some temples on the estate grounds. The village is named after him.

The zamindar bari is one of the most magnificent and largest in Bangladesh. It had at least 200 rooms. Now, it is an abandoned property, which is in a very dilapidated condition. Mostly, the walls of the buildings survive, but the floors and ceilings have disappeared. At present, only one building is in good condition. It is used as Nabin Chandra Girls High school, established in 1975. Later, another new building was constructed for the school. There is a Shiva temple in ruins on the estate. There is another Shiva temple on the way to the house which is in a good condition.

It is one of the least visited historical sites in Bangladesh. But if local people become aware about its heritage value and due attention is given by the relevant authorities, this zamindar bari can be an enormous attraction for tourists.
