Aly Zaker, Mofidul Haque to get ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2017’

Veteran cultural personality Aly Zaker and noted critic Mofidul Haque will be awarded with the prestigious ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2017’ for their outstanding contribution to the respective fields. A crest, uttorio and prize money will be provided to each of the awardees. To remember and pay respect to noted martyred intellectual and music composer Altaf Mahmud, Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation has organised a commemorative programme followed by an award ceremony today at the Kobi Sufia Kamal auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbag in the capital.

Shawon Mahmud, daughter of Altaf Mahmud and member secretary of Altaf Mahmud Foundation has confirmed the news.

To note, Altaf Mahmud (December 23, 1933– September, 1971) was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Along with his singing, Mahmud continued to support the movement. He composed the music for the song ‘Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano’ in 1969, in Zahir Raihan’s film ‘Jibon Theke Neya’. Altaf Mahmud took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. He created a secret camp inside his house for the freedom fighters. When the location of this camp was revealed, the Pakistan Army caught him on August 30, 1971. Mahmud was tortured by them, and many other guerrilla fighters like Shafi Imam Rumi were also captured by the Pakistan Army on that day.

Altaf Mahmud was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1977. He was given the award for his contribution to Bengali culture and in the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 2004, he was awarded an Independence Day Award for his special contribution to Bengali culture.
