Abu Nyeem, is a Bangladeshi dancer and choreographer, working in the evolving contemporary space in this country. He started training at the age of 7, in Bangladeshi folk dance gradually exposing himself to create contemporary movements. Through his years of learning he has also trained in Kathak and Bharatnatyam. He has performed extensively in Bangladesh and South Asia for the last 14 years. His choreographic debut was an experimental production called ‘Ultraviolet’, based on contemporary movements developed and imbibed from Kathak, Jazz and Tap. ‘Ultraviolet’ was produced by Shadhona - A Center for Advancement of Southasian Culture in July 2013.
He participated in a month-long cultural exchange between Shadhona (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Spectrum Dance Theatre (Seattle, USA) culminating into an ‘intercultural dance presentation’ - ‘Looking Forward to The Past’ directed by Donald Byrd, the artistic director of Spectrum.
He has also been placed amidst the top five dancers in one of the most popular dance reality TV shows in Bangladesh called ‘Channel i Shera Nachiye Dance Competition’ in 2014.
Abu Nyeem aims to depart from the classical tradition of gestures, posturing and mythical tales, to arrive at precise, sharp, condensed and inward-bent movements.
He wishes to bring about the concept of resistance and conviction through his process of creative build up.
