The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will get a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) soon, the director general of the force, Maj. Gen. Abul Hossain, has said. The QRF will supply modern arms and ammunition swiftly to border points, if needed.
“We'll also form a region in Ramu, three sectors, eight land battalions, four reserve battalions, two riverine battalions, and 225 border outposts (BOPs) for the border force in different areas to increase its capacity, following the BGB’s vision 2041,” he told reporters at a press conference at the BGB’s headquarters in Pilkhana on Wednesday.
“The three new sectors will be formed at Ali Kadom, Naogaon, and Jessore areas, while the eight land battalions will be formed at Navaron, Meherpur, Khagrachori, Rangamati, Madak, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Kulaura,” he said.
“We'll have two riverine battalions at Neeldumur and Teknaf areas to ensure the security of the riverine borders and ‘char’ (riverine islands) areas,” he added.
He said Bangladesh has 539 porous borders with India and Myanmar. “Of these, we have so far secured 432 km—66 km with India and 81 km with Myanmar,” the BGB chief said. The head of the paramilitary force said they will provide modern arms, ammunition, and equipment to their members to increase their capability as well as ensure border security. “We'll introduce a ‘smart border management system’ at the border points,” he added.
Maj. Gen. Hossain said they will introduce “state-of-the-art technology” and monitor their forces through a digital system soon. He added that they have already formed a “Border Tourism” section under the BGB welfare trust to help tourists visit the historical places and other tourist attractions at the 4,427 border areas of the country.
